Vanya listens to the story with the attention it deserves. It's a classic tale in a lot of ways, Campbellian with the intrigue of war over the concept of justice and freedom. Those are the stories their dad made them read (all in their original languages), but Vanya didn't seek them out herself. It's also like so much of history, which is more Vanya's speed.
"What did being a peacekeeper mean before the war?" Vanya asks. Sometimes she herself felt like something of a peacekeeper climbing uphill in a growing war as a child. In this case, though, war means violence and that means their mission of keeping the peace failed. A whole legion of powered peacekeepers failed their mission because one man wanted to control it all.
"The man - The Emperor - he must have been very powerful." There is no reverence in her voice. It actually makes her vaguely sick, as a person who once found great power and misused it.
